What Is a Water Tanker Truck?

A water tanker truck is a heavy commercial vehicle fitted with a sealed tank — typically 6,000 to 25,000 litres — a centrifugal pump, and a network of spray nozzles or discharge outlets. The driver fills the tank at a water source (river, dam, municipal standpipe, or borehole), drives to the work site, and distributes the water by gravity drain, pump-pressure spray, or rear/side sprinkler bars.

The terms water bowser, water truck, and tanker lorry water all describe the same vehicle class. Bowser is the preferred term across southern Africa (South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe) and East Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania). Water truck is common in the Middle East and West Africa. Both refer to the same product on this page.

Water Tanker Capacity Classes — 6×4 vs 8×4

Capacity is determined by the truck's axle configuration, which sets the gross vehicle mass (GVM) and therefore the maximum tank size that can be legally loaded.

The 6×4 water tanker truck is the most popular unit in our stock. Its 15–18 kL tank handles the majority of construction and municipal contracts, and the lighter unladen weight suits roads that are not fully engineered. The 8×4 water bowser carries 20–25 kL and suits mines and large infrastructure projects where fewer trips per day and higher payload per load are priorities.

Both configurations run the same 371 HP Sinotruk engine family, share a common parts ecosystem across Africa, and accept the same locally stocked filters and wear items.

Tank Materials — Carbon Steel vs Stainless Steel

The tank body is the most expensive component to replace, so choosing the right material matters.

• Carbon steel (Q235 or Q345): the standard choice for dust suppression and non-potable water. Lower cost, heavier wall thickness possible, easy to weld locally. Internally lined with anti-corrosion epoxy paint. Suited for mine road watering, construction dust control, and any application where the water is not consumed by people or livestock.
• Stainless steel (304 grade): required for potable water delivery (community supply, drinking water) and for any application in coastal or high-humidity environments where carbon steel would rust through faster than normal. Lighter per litre of capacity, easier to clean, longer service life in wet climates. Units with stainless tanks are available on request.

Pump, Spray System, and Fittings

A used water tanker truck is only as useful as its pump and spray system. Here is what a complete, working unit should have:

• Centrifugal pump: PTO-driven from the gearbox. Output typically 60–120 m³/h. Check that the pump shaft seal does not leak and that the impeller is not worn flat.
• Spray bars: front spray bar (for spraying ahead of the truck wheels during compaction runs) and rear spray bar with multiple nozzles. Both should be intact — bent or missing nozzles reduce spray width and waste water.
• Side sprinklers: optional on some units. Useful for narrow road work and tree-planting runs.
• Rear quick-fill inlet: large-diameter camlock fitting for fast filling from a hydrant or pump.
• Manhole cover: sealed, with a breather valve to prevent vacuum collapse when discharging.
• Level gauge: mechanical float or sight glass so the driver knows remaining volume without stopping.

All units we export are pump-tested: we run the pump under load, check spray pattern from all bars, and confirm there are no leaks at fittings or tank seams before loading.

Refurbishment, Inspection, and Import Process

Every used water tanker truck in our inventory goes through a documented inspection before we offer it for sale. Key checks include: engine compression, transmission, differential, brake system, chassis frame for cracks, tank pressure test, pump and PTO, spray bar integrity, cab condition, lights and electrics, and tyre depth.

Units that need work are refurbished before listing — not after deposit. Paint, cab interior, and cosmetic finish are restored. You receive an inspection report with the offer.

How import works (CIF shipping):

1. You confirm the unit and pay a deposit.
2. We prepare export documentation: bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, and any required inspection certificate (PVOC or destination-country equivalent).
3. The truck is loaded in a container or as RoRo depending on destination port and unit dimensions.
4. CIF price covers ocean freight and marine insurance to your named port (Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, Durban, Lagos, Port Sudan, Aqaba, Umm Qasr, and others).
5. You arrange import clearance, duty, and inland transport from the port.

Buyer Checklist — Used Water Tanker Truck

Use this list when evaluating any used water tanker, whether from us or another seller:

• Tank pressure test — no leaks at seams, welds, or outlet flanges.
• Pump output test — confirm rated flow rate (m³/h) at full PTO engagement.
• Spray bar check — all nozzles present and producing correct fan pattern.
• Engine smoke test — black smoke under load indicates injector wear; white smoke on cold start is acceptable.
• Chassis inspection — no cracks at spring hangers, crossmembers, or body mounts.
• Brake test — air pressure build-up time, no leaks, equal braking front and rear.
• Tyre condition — check all axles including spare; tanker rear axles wear tyres faster due to loaded weight.
• Manhole and breather — manhole must seal; breather must open under vacuum to prevent tank collapse.
